The Battle of The Mascaras – Round 1

So which mascara gives the best length, volume, stays on all day and doesn’t smudge?

My make up cupboard is full of different mascaras.  I constantly seek out and buy the latest mascara on the market in the hope that I have, at last, found the ultimate mascara that will fulfil all of my dreams – beautiful, full and long lashes that frame my eyes and make them look amazing.  A mascara that doesn’t smudge and will look the same in the evening as it did when I put it on hours before.

Mascara is one of the most important pieces of make up in anyone’s make up kit.  If you’ve had a late night, early morning, feel tired or unwell, just a few sweeps of that mascara brush and you instantly look better.  So which mascara can tick all of these boxes?

To find the best mascara out there, I will be holding……..

In future posts, I will be putting mascaras head to head.  To make sure it’s a fair battle, all mascaras will be put through the same tests.  I will only be wearing the mascara and no other eye make up, I’ll always put on 2 coats of each mascara and I won’t curl my eyelashes before applying the mascara, so that it’s very clear to see how the mascara looked on my lashes.  And I’ll always use the same make up remover to take the mascaras off – Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water.   The mascara that wins a particular post will go forward to the next mascara battle and be pitted against the next mascara challenger.

ROUND 1 – MAYBELLINE New York Lash Sensational Vs. BENEFIT They’re Real!

Maybelline Lash Sensational is on my left eye as you look at the photograph and Benefit They’re Real! is on the right eye.

Bare Eyelashes

After 1 Coat of Mascara

After 2 Coats of Mascara

Maybelline Lash Sensational is the mascara I currently use but I know that Benefit They’re Real is a very popular mascara and used by some Flawsome.Rocks readers, so I am really interested to know which one will come out on top.

20160814_151057Maybelline Lash Sensational (£7.99 at time of writing post) –

On opening the mascara you will find a slightly curved, short bristle brush with the inside of the curve having smaller bristles and the outside of the curve having longer bristles.  The mascara has a faint smell to it that’s not offensive.  It went on easily and did not smudge on to the skin around my eyes.  I used the smaller bristles on the inside of the brush for the first application and the larger bristles on the outside of the curved brush for the second and final application.

After a few hours – This mascara had stayed on beautifully and hadn’t smudgedone.

Removal – This mascara was easily removed using a cotton pad soaked in Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water, however it took slightly longer and I had to use more cleansing water and pads to remove it then the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara.

20160814_150756Benefit they’re Real! (£19.50 at time of writing post) –

On opening this mascara you will find a straight brush with fairly short bristles – this mascara doesn’t have an odour.  It went on very easily and with the brush being straight, I found angling the brush to get to my shorter outer lashes easier.  It went on very easily and did not smudge around my eyes.

After a few hours – Again, stayed on beautifully and hadn’t smudged.

Removal – Came off very quickly and easily using a cotton pad soaked in Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water

After 8 hours wear.

And the winner is……. This is a difficult one.  Both mascaras performed really well, went on beautifully, really improved the look of my lashes and stayed on all day.  There really is very little in it but the Benefit they’real Real! mascara definitely looks better, stayed on beautifully and made my eyelashes look longer and fuller for longer.  With such a big difference in price between both mascaras, the Maybelline Lash Sensational is a brilliant mascara and comes a very close second, but I think, just beating it to first place, has to be Benefit they’re Real!

So the Benefit they’re Real Mascara goes on to the next round!

  1. My Benefit they’re Real is just coming to the point where it needs replacing. Saw a review in the paper over the weekend which recommended GOSH Lash Sculpting Fibre Mascara at £10 and Bourjois Volume Reveal at £10…Should I hold out a little longer before I get my replacement in??
